HS2, BIRMINGHAM INTERCHANGE STATION

Europe’s largest infrastructure project; High Speed Two will see a new Interchange station on the outskirts of Birmingham serving the Midlands. Carbon.Climate.Certified collaboration with the Arup led Interchange project team provides lead roles on BREEAM and sustainability, delivering one of the most advanced, low carbon railway stations to be built worldwide.

The new station complex is predicted to serve over 21,000 passengers each day, rising to 38,000 in 2040 forming a catalyst for economic growth locally and regionally. As well as the challenge of linking Arup Associates award winning Architecture, a complex Arup led building services strategy and a major civil engineering project, Certified coordinated stringent sustainability and environmental targets within a wide-ranging design team with the scheme achieving BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ at design stage; the first railway station to globally achieve this level of certification.This exceptional award recognises the station’s eco-friendly features, including maximising natural daylight and ventilation, a station roof design which can capture and reuse rainwater, and features to enable net zero carbon emissions from day-to-day energy consumption.

The station’s design minimises  energy demand through the use of natural ventilation and daylighting. Energy efficient technologies will be incorporated, such as air source heat pumps and LED lighting. In addition, the station and linked airport monorail named the ‘Automated People Mover’ including maintenance facility have over 2,000m2 of solar panels generating zero carbon electricity.

Directing rainwater from the main station building via a network of underground pipes into a rainwater harvesting tank will assist in providing part of the building’s water requirements whilst landscaping features sustainable drainage systems to reduce the burden on surface water drainage whilst naturally irrigating planted areas as well as planting new natural habitats created around the station, leaving a legacy of biodiversity and an enhancement of native species.

There will be 222 electric vehicle charging points in the Interchange station car park, and cycle storage for 176 bicycles with further room for expansion as demand dictates. There will also be a focus on pedestrian access into the station from the east of the railway, newly constructed cycle access to the new station from the north, west and south-east through a mixture of dedicated routes and increases in public transport services.
