SIR WILLIAM HENRY BRAGG BUILDING, UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS

The University of Leeds Sir WIlliam Henry Bragg Building development is a state of the art integrated research and academic facility for physical sciences and engineering, including the schools of Computing and Physics and Astronomy. The 15,700sqm facility will be a national benchmark in terms of world-class research and student education in these areas.

The vision is to create a world class environment for international disciplinary, collaborative research and student education from which sustainable but ambitious growth in academic staff and student numbers can be developed through culture change and new ways of working. This is also to be reflected in the physical sustainability of the scheme, by a complete refurbishment an extension of an existing Grade II listed building and a connection into a modern, new build wing that will reflect the latest in low carbon and efficient design.

The University of Leeds are strongly supporting a building that can respond to clear sustainability standards, despite what is a complex and restricted site, an extremely complicated array of building uses and the limitations associated with historic Grade II listed buildings.

Now complete, the scheme underwent a BREEAM Assessment of both the new build and refurbishment areas and reached a combined standard of BREEAM ‘Excellent’ – one of the finest examples of BREEAM assessed Grade II listed buildings in the UK completed in 2020.
