WARWICK

TYPE - RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
EXPERTISE - BREEAM NEW CONSTRUCTION
NATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE INNOVATION CENTRE, WARWICK

The National Automotive Innovation Campus (NAIC) will provide a national focus and a critical mass of research capability in the Automotive design field. The 30,000m2 building will occupy a 25 hectare site on the existing University of Warwick campus, forming a hub of Warwick Manufacturing Group research and education buildings.

The NAIC building will provide a range of facilities including R&D collaborative workspace, engineering space for advanced powertrain, hybrid and chassis research, as well as visualisation areas, design studios, demonstration areas, acoustic rooms, undergraduate teaching space and offices.

The highly complex building, which will accommodate up to 1,000 people is a huge challenge in terms of BREEAM Assessment; multiple disciplines and end users, a range of internal climate and user conditions, functional & technologically advanced workspaces and a brief to ensure it is seen as a flagship building for British engineering. There is also a strong desire to ensure the building responds to the environmental challenges currently faced by the automotive industry, the building is targeting BREEAM ‘Excellent’ but has also undergone detailed feasibility in opportunities to reach BREEAM ‘Outstanding’, which Carbon.Climate.Certified undertook.

There has also been an exceptional amount of design analysis to ensure the bespoke design elements of the building, particularly the roof and façade are meeting BREEAM compliance, alongside thorough review of the building services design which includes connection to a CHP District Heat network & roof mounted PV as part of the LZC strategy and an EPC rating of ‘A’.

Externally the site will introduce a new swale and extensive ecological and bio diverse habitats, native to the area will compliment the existing campus Landscape strategy. There will be no additional car parking provided on site but building users will be encouraged to travel by bicycle or public transport with extensive new facilities being provided.

Our scope not only included BREEAM Assessment services, but engagement with the buildings keys stakeholders as well as providing feedback and strategic analysis in Value Engineering exercises, and providing content for the fit-out requirements within the heads of terms for the sub-leased areas of the building.
