BREEAM Rating: 'Outstanding'
Client: Meller Ltd / Bacardi Martini
Completion Date: 2014
Architect: GWP Architecture
Project Value: £30 million

The Bombay Sapphire Gin distillery, set within a Victorian mill complex in rural Hampshire, is a unique blend of new build and refurbishment. Located in a Conservation Area with Grade II listed buildings and the SSSI-protected River Test flowing through the site, the development balances heritage with cutting-edge sustainability.

As the first industrial or refurbishment project to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating at design stage, it incorporates renewable energy systems such as biomass, photovoltaics, and hydropower. Rainwater harvesting further enhances its environmental credentials, while a robust engagement process involved local residents and community stakeholders throughout the design process.

GWP Project Services, acting as BREEAM Accredited Professionals, worked closely with main contractors, Meller Ltd, to ensure full compliance with BREEAM standards. From workshops to toolbox talks, every aspect of site management, procurement, and construction was meticulously planned, making this distillery a global benchmark in sustainable design and refurbishment.
