Europe’s largest infrastructure project; High Speed Two will see a new Interchange station on the outskirts of Birmingham serving the Midlands. Our collaboration with the Arup led Interchange project team provides lead roles on BREEAM and sustainability, delivering one of the most advanced, low carbon railway stations to be built worldwide.
BREEAM Rating: Outstanding
The new station complex is expected to serve over 21,000 passengers daily, rising to 38,000 by 2040, driving local and regional economic growth. It has achieved BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification, the first railway station globally to do so, thanks to its eco-friendly features like natural daylighting, rainwater capture, and net-zero carbon emissions.
The design minimizes energy demand using natural ventilation and daylight, incorporating air source heat pumps, LED lighting, and over 2,000 m² of solar panels for zero-carbon electricity. A rainwater harvesting system will help meet water needs, while sustainable drainage will support landscaping and enhance biodiversity.
The station will offer 222 electric vehicle charging points and storage for 176 bicycles, with room for expansion. It will also improve pedestrian and cycle access from multiple directions, alongside enhanced public transport services
