Shortlisted for a BREEAM 2022 Award, The School of Engineering Building at the University of Birmingham is a new construction replacing a series of smaller buildings on the same site located on campus, just southwest of Birmingham city centre.

The heart of the building is a multifunctional exhibition/circulation space. Off from this the building comprises of a variety of lab spaces as listed for EESE and BCRRE activity, seminar rooms and small tutorial spaces & offices and a roof top seminar room opening onto an open-air research & teaching facility.
The principles of the design endeavour to use the building as a learning tool in its self. This ideology will manifest by internally and externally having exposed structure as well as provide opportunities to attach sensors on the structure/facade displaying readings.
The scheme has utilised a district heating strategy to provide low carbon heat and hot water and electricity for its students and staff.
Carbon.Climate.Certified have previously worked closely with the University, and members of the design team to secure BREEAM compliance throughout the design and post construction stages aiming for a high consistency of ‘Excellent’ rated buildings. This requires consistent analysis of operations, review and input on the change request process and regular review of the BREEAM assessment status.
