The Sir William Henry Bragg Building at the University of Leeds is a 15,700m² state-of-the-art research and teaching facility for computing, physics, and engineering. It sets a new national standard in sustainable academic design.
Challenge
The University aimed to create a modern, collaborative space that could support future growth while respecting the heritage of a Grade II listed building. Integrating a new low-carbon wing with the careful refurbishment of the historic structure presented technical, logistical, and sustainability challenges. The complex site and the limitations of working within a listed building required innovative thinking and close coordination across disciplines.
Outcome & Solution
We provided BREEAM assessment services throughout the project, supporting the design and construction teams in embedding sustainability from concept through to completion. The development achieved a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating, which is a significant accomplishment considering the constraints of a heritage building. The facility now stands as one of the leading examples of sustainable refurbishment in higher education, supporting world-class research, teaching, and the University’s long-term environmental ambitions.
