The Bombay Sapphire Distillery in rural Hampshire is a pioneering mix of refurbishment and new build. Set within a Victorian mill complex, the project achieved BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ at design stage, making it the first industrial or refurbishment scheme in the world to do so.
Challenge
Delivering an ultra-sustainable development in a Conservation Area, with Grade II listed buildings and the SSSI-protected River Test running through the site, required a highly sensitive and innovative approach. The team needed to balance heritage conservation with ambitious environmental goals, while also securing the support of the local community and stakeholders throughout the design and construction process.
Outcome & Solution
As BREEAM Accredited Professionals, we worked closely with GWP Project Services and main contractors Meller Ltd to guide the project through BREEAM requirements. This included leading sustainability workshops, supporting construction teams through toolbox talks, and embedding environmental best practice across site management and procurement. The result is a global benchmark in sustainable design, featuring biomass, photovoltaics, hydropower, and rainwater harvesting, all while protecting and enhancing the site's unique ecological and historical value.
