Appointed as sustainability lead subcontractor to Arup, we continue to support the delivery of both BREEAM Assessor and BREEAM AP roles over a programme spanning nearly ten years. The project represents one of the most complex applications of BREEAM globally, incorporating bespoke HS2 Stations criteria and a large multidisciplinary team.

Details

We provided sustainability and BREEAM coordination for a major transport interchange operating within a highly complex infrastructure environment, interfacing with rail, highways, mass transit and extensive public realm. Our role supported the early integration of accessibility, connectivity and public realm design, ensuring compliance with evolving BREEAM requirements.

Working across a large multidisciplinary team, we coordinated ecology, energy, drainage, materials and transport strategies, aligning both with BREEAM and bespoke HS2 sustainability criteria. This included extending strategies beyond the immediate station footprint to respond to the wider masterplan.

Acting as a central point of coordination, we managed inputs, dependencies and programme across multiple stakeholders. Through early engagement and structured workshops, we enabled Design Stage certification at an unusually early phase, equivalent to RIBA Stage 2.

We also played a key role in driving performance, helping to embed ambitious sustainability targets across the design team. This resulted in the project achieving BREEAM ‘Outstanding’, becoming the first mass transit station globally to reach this rating under the bespoke HS2 criteria.
